RECORD COLLECTOR Magazine No.254 October 2000

After spending the 60’s in Tony Rivers & the Castaways and soft rock geniuses Harmony Grass, Tony Rivers struck out on his own in 1970.  He became a house producer at CBS and an in-demand session singer, wanted for his arranging abilities and his vocal skills. A combination of both led him to become Cliff Richard’s vocal arranger, leaving his imprint on hits such as ‘Miss You Nights’.  RPM’s set chronicles Rivers creative 70’s period where influences such as the Beach Boys were supplemented by harmonising soul outfits like the Stylistics and the Chi-Lites.

The most familiar track here is ‘Whatever Happened To You’, issued as ‘Highly Likely’.  If that doesn’t jog any memories, try this: ‘Oh What Happened To You? Whatever Happened To Me? What Became Of The People We Used To Be?’.  Yup, it’s the theme to the Likely Lads.

The core of ‘Harmony Soul’ is a clutch of unreleased songs, ranging from the lovely David Gates/CS&N influenced ‘Getting The Feeling’, to ‘I’m Not Your Stepping Stone’, with it’s shades of Earth Wind and Fire.  ‘You’re The Song (That I Can’t Stop Singing)’, released as ‘Hollywood Freeway’, is an amazing evocation of the mid-70’s vocal soul sound. A great tribute to a unique talent.
